D2L Brightspace connector

Use your D2L Brightspace data for reporting, automation and AI.

Data Panda pulls your Brightspace courses, learners, enrolments, grades and assessment data into the same warehouse as your SIS, HR and CRM. From one place we turn it into dashboards, automations, AI workflows and custom apps that programme leads, registrars, training managers and L and D owners use during the term, not only on the day a board pack lands.

About D2L Brightspace

An LMS that runs higher-ed, K-12 and corporate learning on the same platform.

D2L was founded in 1999 in Waterloo, Ontario by John Baker while he was an undergraduate in systems design engineering at the University of Waterloo. The company is headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in November 2021 under the ticker DTOL, and reports more than twenty-one million learners and over fifteen hundred customer institutions across higher education, K-12, associations and corporate training.

Brightspace is the flagship LMS, with add-on suites for course authoring (Creator+), outcomes-based education (Achievement+), engagement and learning insights (Performance+), e-commerce (Course Merchant) and AI-assisted authoring and tutoring (D2L Lumi). The pattern that makes Brightspace distinct is the same platform handling a degree-granting university, a K-12 district and a corporate training programme, which means courses, sections, enrolments, assignments, quiz attempts, grades, discussions and learning outcomes sit in one structure across very different audiences. Pulled into a warehouse next to your SIS, HR system, CRM and finance ledger, that structure finally answers questions that span teaching, retention and revenue: which programmes lose learners between term one and term two, which K-12 cohorts are slipping on assessment outcomes by school and grade, and which corporate compliance modules are quietly past due across the BUs about to face an audit.

What your D2L Brightspace data is for

What you get once D2L Brightspace is connected.

Learning and retention reporting

Retention, completion, at-risk learners and assessment outcomes on one page across programmes, schools and BUs.

  • Retention and completion per programme, cohort and term, with the drop-off stage named
  • At-risk learners flagged from grade, attendance and engagement signals weeks before the cut-off
  • Assessment outcome attainment per learning objective, course and school

Process automation

Turn SIS, HR and CRM events into the right Brightspace enrolments and follow-ups, instead of a registrar or training admin running a weekly assignment queue.

  • Sync SIS enrolments and section moves into Brightspace with the correct course offering
  • Provision corporate-training cohorts from a closed-won CRM account or a new hire in HR
  • Push grade-book and quiz results back into the system of record so transcripts stay clean

AI workflows

Put learner, course and assessment history behind AI that sees the full learning picture, not one course at a time.

  • At-risk scoring across courses using grade, login and submission signals
  • Learning-outcome gap detection across cohorts joined to programme requirements
  • Natural-language Q and A across the course catalogue, syllabi and learner records

Custom apps on your data

Lightweight tools for programme leads, deans, principals and L and D managers who should not need a Brightspace seat to read their own group.

  • Programme-lead workbench with cohort retention, completion and at-risk flags
  • School or campus dashboard with grade-level outcome attainment per teacher
  • Compliance-training audit pack that exports completions for any policy and BU

Real business questions

Answers you will finally get.

Which programmes are losing learners between terms?

Retention per programme and cohort across terms, with the named drop-off stage and the at-risk signals that preceded it. Programme leads and deans see the cohort sitting at fifty-eight percent retention while the school rolls up at eighty-two, instead of finding it in the senate pack two weeks before the meeting.

Are our learners hitting the outcomes the curriculum promises?

Outcome attainment per learning objective, joined to assessment results and programme requirements. Curriculum committees see which objectives a cohort consistently misses across instructors and which are concentrated in one section, instead of reading per-course quiz reports one at a time.

Is mandatory corporate training closed across every BU?

Overdue rate per policy and BU, with the named learners who block sign-off, against the audit window. L and D and compliance see the BU at forty percent completion while the group rolls up at ninety, instead of finding it on an auditor's spreadsheet.

Value for everyone in the organisation

Where each function gets value.

For finance leaders

Continuing-education revenue, course-merchant orders and corporate-training contract usage joined to the finance ledger. You see which paid streams are pulling their weight before a budget review, not after.

For sales leaders

For institutions selling continuing-ed or corporate training: pipeline and renewal joined to actual learner adoption. You see which B2B accounts are coasting on a handful of active learners against the seats they signed for, weeks before the renewal call.

For operations

Programme retention, at-risk learners, instructor workload and compliance overdue in one operational picture. The dean's, principal's or L and D huddle stops being three Brightspace exports lined up next to an SIS or HR extract.

Ideas

What you can automate with D2L Brightspace.

Pair with Salesforce

Provision corporate-training cohorts from a closed-won Salesforce account

Opportunities that close in Salesforce trigger the corporate-training enrolment package in Brightspace against the account, with the right learner roster, course offering and section. Customer success sees adoption per account in the warehouse next to ARR and renewal date, so the renewal conversation opens with the actual usage instead of an LMS download from the day before.

Pair with HubSpot

Enrol HubSpot leads into the right continuing-education stream

Lead lifecycle stages and form submissions in HubSpot drive Brightspace enrolments into the matching continuing-ed or paid-course stream the moment a prospect commits. Marketing sees enrolment-to-completion conversion per campaign in the warehouse, so the next campaign brief is written against actual learner journeys, not against open and click rates.

Pair with HiBob

Enrol new hires into the right onboarding and compliance paths from day one

Active employees, role and start date from HiBob drive Brightspace enrolments into the matching onboarding and compliance courses the moment a hire goes active. Role transfers move the learner into the new path and close the old one, so onboarding ramp time is measured against the real start date and a manager never has to chase HR for the hire that never showed up in the LMS.

Pair with Slack

Push the right at-risk-learner and overdue-compliance pings into Slack

At-risk flags, missed assignment deadlines and overdue mandatory compliance from Brightspace trigger the right Slack messages: a tutor or programme-lead ping when a cohort starts slipping, a manager ping when a direct report misses a compliance deadline, and a compliance-channel digest of the policies that still block sign-off this week. The registrar or training admin stops running a weekly nudge queue by hand.

Pair with MS Dynamics 365 CRM

Sync Dynamics 365 student or member records into Brightspace enrolments

Student, member or contact lifecycle in Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM drives Brightspace enrolments and section moves so the registrar or association manager stops re-keying the same person in two systems. Programme owners see admission, enrolment and progression in the warehouse against the same record the CRM holds, instead of reconciling exports by hand.

Pair with monday.com

Open programme- and curriculum-review tasks in monday.com from Brightspace signals

Cohort retention drops, weak outcome attainment and stale catalogue items in Brightspace open the right monday.com items for the programme team: a curriculum-review task on the course where the same outcome keeps missing, a content-refresh task on a module that has not changed in two years, and an at-risk-cohort intervention task with the named learners. The programme-quality cycle stops being a quarterly slide and starts being a queue.

Three steps

From D2L Brightspace to answers in three steps.

01

Connect securely

OAuth authentication. Read-only by default. We sign a DPA and your admin keeps the keys.

02

Land in your warehouse

Data flows into your warehouse on your schedule. Near real time or nightly, your call. You own the data.

03

Reporting, automation, AI

We build the first dashboard, workflow or AI feature with you, then hand over the keys. Or we stay on for ongoing delivery.

Two ways to work with us

Pick the track that fits how you work.

Track 01

Self-serve

We set up the foundation. Your team builds on top.

  • D2L Brightspace connector configured and running
  • Warehouse set up in your cloud account
  • Clean access for your Power BI, Fabric or Tableau team
  • Documentation on what's in the data model
  • Sync monitoring so you're warned before reports break

Best fit Teams that already have a BI analyst or data engineer and want to own the build.

Track 02

Done for you

We build the whole thing, end to end.

  • Everything in Self-serve
  • Dashboards built to the questions your team actually asks
  • Automations between your systems
  • AI workflows scoped to real tasks your team runs
  • Custom apps where a dashboard does not cut it
  • Ongoing delivery at a pace that fits your team

Best fit Teams without in-house BI or dev capacity. You tell us what you need and we deliver it.

Before you book

Frequently asked questions.

Who owns the data?

You do. It lands in your warehouse, on your cloud account. We don't resell or aggregate it. If you stop working with us, the warehouse stays yours and keeps running.

How fresh is the data?

Near real time for most operational systems. For heavier sources we schedule hourly or nightly. You pick based on what the reports need.

Do I need a warehouse already?

No. If you don't have one, we help you pick one and set it up as part of the first delivery. Common starting points are Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, or a small Postgres start.

How do you handle Brightspace org units, departments and faculties in one warehouse?

Brightspace organises courses, sections and learners under an org-unit hierarchy that usually maps onto your faculties, schools, departments or campuses. The connector preserves that hierarchy on every record, so reporting can roll up by org unit, by parent or by audience type without an admin re-tagging users in a downstream tool. Retention, completion and outcome attainment all read the same source of truth as the Brightspace UI does.

Do you use Brightspace Data Hub or the API?

Both, depending on the data set. Brightspace Data Hub exposes incremental data sets (Brightspace Data Sets) that are well suited to warehouse loads of historical activity, grades and enrolments at scale. The Valence API is used for entities and lookups where Data Hub does not cover the field you need, or where the cadence has to be near real time. The connector picks per object so you do not pay for an API call when a Data Set is already current.

How do you keep learner records compliant with student-data policy?

Free-text submissions, quiz answers and any field flagged as personal or special category can be kept in restricted schemas that only registrar, instructor and compliance roles reach, while completion status, enrolment and outcome attainment are available to the dashboards the rest of the institution reads. Access is enforced in the warehouse, not per dashboard, so a new programme report cannot accidentally surface a quiz answer or a free-text reflection it should not see.
