About D2L Brightspace
An LMS that runs higher-ed, K-12 and corporate learning on the same platform.
D2L was founded in 1999 in Waterloo, Ontario by John Baker while he was an undergraduate in systems design engineering at the University of Waterloo. The company is headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in November 2021 under the ticker DTOL, and reports more than twenty-one million learners and over fifteen hundred customer institutions across higher education, K-12, associations and corporate training.
Brightspace is the flagship LMS, with add-on suites for course authoring (Creator+), outcomes-based education (Achievement+), engagement and learning insights (Performance+), e-commerce (Course Merchant) and AI-assisted authoring and tutoring (D2L Lumi). The pattern that makes Brightspace distinct is the same platform handling a degree-granting university, a K-12 district and a corporate training programme, which means courses, sections, enrolments, assignments, quiz attempts, grades, discussions and learning outcomes sit in one structure across very different audiences. Pulled into a warehouse next to your SIS, HR system, CRM and finance ledger, that structure finally answers questions that span teaching, retention and revenue: which programmes lose learners between term one and term two, which K-12 cohorts are slipping on assessment outcomes by school and grade, and which corporate compliance modules are quietly past due across the BUs about to face an audit.
