About Dovetail

Where your customer research stops living in slide decks.

Dovetail was founded in 2017 in Sydney by Benjamin Humphrey and Bradley Ayers as a place to store, tag and analyse customer research instead of losing it in folders, decks and individual notebooks. It has grown into a customer intelligence platform used by teams at Atlassian, Canva, Cisco, Shopify, AWS and Notion to turn calls, transcripts, surveys and support tickets into structured insights, with AI features (Magic, AI Projects, AI Channels) layered on top to cluster themes and surface patterns.

The reason to pull Dovetail into a warehouse is that an insight is rarely the finish line. A research theme belongs next to the feature adoption it predicts, an interview transcript belongs next to the account it came from, a tagged quote belongs next to the renewal date or the support ticket it explains. On its own a Dovetail project lives inside the research tool; joined to your CRM, product and billing data it becomes evidence the rest of the business can act on.

Who owns the data?

You do. It lands in your warehouse, on your cloud account. We don't resell or aggregate it. If you stop working with us, the warehouse stays yours and keeps running.

How fresh is the data?

Near real time for most operational systems. For heavier sources we schedule hourly or nightly. You pick based on what the reports need.

Do I need a warehouse already?

No. If you don't have one, we help you pick one and set it up as part of the first delivery. Common starting points are Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, or a small Postgres start.

Which Dovetail objects can land in the warehouse?

The Dovetail public API exposes projects, notes, tags, fields, files, highlights, channels, insights, comments and users, and we sync those as separate tables with the relationships between them preserved. That means a tagged highlight inside a note inside a project inside a channel can be queried in either direction, and joined to the customer the note describes.

If Dovetail already clusters themes with AI, why pull the data into a warehouse?

Dovetail's AI features (Magic, AI Channels, AI Projects) cluster themes inside the research tool, which is the right place for that work. The warehouse serves a different question: how does a research theme line up with the account, the plan, the feature usage and the renewal date that live in your CRM, product database and billing system. Theme clustering stays in Dovetail; theme-to-revenue analysis happens in the warehouse.
